Julian Richards

JULIAN RICHARDS

Julian Richards was born in Newport, South Wales in 1968. He began making films aged thirteen using his father's 8mm camera.

In 1985 one of these films The Girl That Cried Wolf was broadcast on The BBC2 Film Showcase. After an Arts Foundation course at Gwent, Julian enrolled at Bournemouth Film School to pursue his career as a director.


               


          

At Bournemouth Julian made two films; Pirates which won The Starting Out Award at The Celtic Film Festival before being broadcast by HTV and Queen Sacrifice which won The Thames Television Award for Best Fiction Film at The British Short Film Festival before being broadcast in the BBC series Screenplay Firsts and Scene .

In 1988 Julian joined The National Film & Television School where he was approached, while still only a first year student, to direct In With The Rent a Playhouse for BBC Wales. In 1991 he returned to film school and completed his graduation film Bad Company which was televised by HTV.

In 1992 Julian adapted Chris Westwood's novel Calling All Monsters for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. 

In 1994 he directed a short docu/drama A Mutter Of Voices for Wall To Wall Television, twelve episodes of Brookside for Mersey Television, and he devised a male stripper documentary Showboys: The Naked Truth which screened in the BBC series, Video Diaries.


         

In 1997 Julian wrote and directed his debut feature film Darklands which won The Melies D'Argent for Best European Fantasy Film before receiving worldwide release through Metrodome, Pathe, 20th Century Fox, Filmax, Splendid etc.

In 2002 Julian directed the conspiracy thriller Silent Cry which won a Gold Remi at Worldfest Houston, recieved its network premiere on Channel Five and is being sold worlwide by Screen Media Ventures.

In 2003 he set up Prolific Films where he produced and directed The Last Horror Movie which won fourteen awards including a second Melies for Best European Fantasy Film before recieving worldwide release through Tartan, Hart Sharp, Thinkfilm, Nordisk, Legend etc

In 2006 Julian produced and directed Summer Scars which is currently in post production.
